What the GPU does in a smartphone

The GPU (graphics processing unit) is the part of the chipset that draws everything you see: the interface, animations, games and video. On phones it sits in the same chip as the CPU, so it cannot be replaced or upgraded.

A faster GPU means smoother gaming and better sustained performance at high screen refresh rates. Two phones with the same CPU can behave very differently in games because of the GPU paired with it, which is why this catalog lists it as a separate field.
